DeRubeis, Rounds pace Rapids past Pioneers

ELMIRA — Vinny DeRubeis went 3-for-4, including a double and triple, and drove in a run to spark the Watertown Rapids to a 7-5 win over the Elmira Pioneers on Friday night in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game at Dunn Field.

Michael Rounds also collected three hits, including a double, and knocked in a run, and Emil Matti singled three times and scored two runs to help pace the Rapids (5-1), who extended their winning streak to four games.

Starter Drew Mead pitched four-plus innings to earn the win, while relievers Spencer Vainavicz (two-plus innings) and James Krick (two innings) each didn’t allow a run to finish off the win.

Watertown led 2-0 in the first inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from DeRubeis and Rounds. After Elmira scored single runs in the first and second innings to tie the score, Brandon Taylor doubled in a run in the fourth for a 3-2 Rapids’ lead.

Watertown scored three more runs in the fifth to lead 6-2 on an RBI double from Derek Kasperzyk and a run-scoring singles from Tony Socci and Taylor, and added a run in the ninth.
