General Brown to host building tours for new students Friday

pDEXTER — With many General Brown elementary students switching schools in the next academic year, the school district is hosting an assembly on Friday to familiarize students with their new buildings./ppThe reconfiguration, as part of the district’s strategic plan, will include Brownville-Glen Park and Dexter elementary schools. Dexter Elementary School will serve all students in preschool to grade two, and Brownville-Glen Park will serve all students in grades three to six, regardless of where students live in the district./ppThe reasoning for the reconfiguration was originally outlined in a letter to parents and guardians of children in the district on Jan. 10, with three town hall meetings held for public feedback before the Board of Election’s approval./ppIn the letter, three issues were listed that interrupt educational programming, hoped to be helped by reconfiguration. Specifically, the issues are “unbalanced classroom sizes between buildings, loss of instructional time for students displaced due to unbalanced enrollments and few opportunities for grade-level collaboration among teachers.”/ppAbout 170 current Brownville students and 160 current Dexter students will change schools for the 2019-2020 academic year./ppAccording to a news release, the assembly, set to last about an hour, will focus on building a sense of community for the students …read more
