GOUVERNEUR — Gouverneur coach Joel Baer explained one of the reasons the Wildcats have forged a historic win streak of 90 straight Northern Athletic Conference matches.
“Wrestling is a generational thing at Gouverneur. But we still have to work very hard at it. Wrestling is a very tough sport,” he said.
Gouverneur wrestlers have fared well in tournaments all over New York State, winning six individual state championships and earning 47 placings on the state podium. The family progression in the program is illustrated by Baer and his son, freshman standout Carter, who placed sixth in the state as a seventh grader at 99 pounds and fifth last season as an eighth grader at 106 pounds. He also placed fourth in the Middle School Nationals.
This season he has moved to 126 pounds, which is a challenging weight class state-wide, and continued his success by going 6-0 on Saturday at the Mark Stevens Classic in Horseheads. He also picked up a win in the Wildcats’ NAC opening win over Ogdensburg Free Academy last week, raising his career record to 77-12.
