WATERTOWN — Watertown High School has decided to move its football program from Section 3 to Northern Athletic Conference for the start of the 2019 season. The move is initially a two-year deal that will make Watertown a Section 10 school through the 2020 season.
The football program will remain in Class A and is the only program at Watertown moving to Section 10. It will be the Cyclones’ second stint in the NAC; they competed in Section 10 between 1986 and 2000 where they went 97-28 against Section 10 teams.
Watertown athletic director George Emrich said Watertown came to the decision to make the move in late January. “We thought that Section 10, the competition (would) be a little better for us,” he said.
“The competition is a little bit more equitable for us, we’ll see a little bit more success,” Emrich added. “Hopefully more students will come out for football.”
The Cyclones’ last winning season came in 2011 when they finished 6-3; in the seven seasons since, they have a combined record of 12-44.
