MIDDLETOWN — A pair of second-place finishes by Frontier League girls highlighted the opening day of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Middletown High School on Friday.
South Lewis’s Hannah Ielfield placed second in Division II in the 3,000-meter run and South Jefferson’s Marlena Jacobs was second in Division II in the pole vault.
Four other area girls won medals as well, with South Lewis’ Lexi Bernard finishing sixth in Division II in the 3,000, Norwood-Norfolk’s Maddie Dinneen finishing fifth in Division II in the 800, Malone’s Haley Raville finishing sixth in Division II in the shot put, and South Jefferson’s wheelchair athlete Elise Hill winning the 100 and shot put.
Ielfield’s medal was never in doubt as she ran second to Mount Sinai’s Sarah Connelly throughout the 3,000, finishing in 10 minutes, 2.01 seconds. Connelly won the Division II title in 9:34.63.
“It (being in such a loaded heat) made me start out faster and give me a better time,” Ielfield said.
Ielfield also picked up a Federation medal with an eighth-place showing. North Rockland’s Katelyn Tuohy, who was Sports Illustrated’s national girls high school athlete of the year last year, won the race …read more
