ALBANY — A group of state lawmakers on Monday called on their colleagues in the Legislature to swiftly pass measures that would ban the sale of all flavored tobacco products in the state.
“It’s time that we ban all flavors of e-cigarettes and all other flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes, and protect the next generation of New Yorkers from nicotine and these deadly products,” said state Sen. Brad Hoylman, D-Manhattan. “We’re going to take action this year and ban these products.”
The lawmakers were flanked at their news conference by representatives of social justice groups, including NAACP leaders, parent advocates, public health organizations and health care providers.
Their pledge to pursue legislation against the tobacco and vaping industries took place three days after a state Supreme Court justice struck down New York’s ban on the sale of certain flavored electronic liquids, granting an injunction sought by the vaping industry that challenged the legality and constitutionality of an emergency order issued last year by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the state Health Department.
