Florida again a top destination for ex-New Yorkers in 2023

ALBANY — New York has been losing population to other states for years and new data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows where they moved in 2023.

An estimated 481,544 people migrated from New York to another state last year, according to the data, and many chose states with warmer climates and different politics.

The top destination for those ex-New Yorkers was Florida, where an estimated 71,138 people relocated. But 24,749 people did the opposite, resulting in an estimated net loss from New York to Florida of 30,664.

That’s not a surprise. Florida has consistently attracted more New Yorkers than most other states in recent years. More than 91,000 people moved there from New York in 2022.

But the second and third most popular states were closer to home. New Jersey and Pennsylvania ranked second and third, after Florida, in attracting former New Yorkers.

An estimated 55,926 people left for New Jersey, and Pennsylvania welcomed about 42,637. But people also moved from those states to New York, resulting in a net outflow of 15,452 to New Jersey and 15,034 to Pennsylvania.

Rounding out the top five most attractive states for New Yorkers last year were California and Texas.

An estimated 35,062 people moved from New York to California and 29,610 departed for Texas, the data shows. But the net loss from New York was 3,965 to California and 10,654 to Texas when you subtract the people who moved here from those states.

Top five states where New Yorkers moved in 2023:

  1. Florida: 71,138
  2. New Jersey: 55,926
  3. Pennsylvania: 42,637
  4. California: 35,062
  5. Texas: 29,610

Hundreds of thousands of people — an estimated 302,835 — moved to New York from other states last year. Subtract that from the people who moved out and you have an estimated net outflow of 178,709.

The top five states that lost residents to New York were New Jersey, California, Pennsylvania, Florida and Massachusetts.

An estimated 21,001 people moved from Massachusetts to New York. But because Massachusetts lost more people to the Empire State than it took in, New York saw a net gain of 4,754 people — more than any other state.

The top five states that lost residents to New York:

  • New Jersey: 40,474
  • California: 31,097
  • Pennsylvania: 27,603
  • Florida: 24,749
  • Massachusetts: 21,001

Montana was the least popular state for New Yorkers to move to last year; North Dakota lost the least residents to the Empire State, the data shows.
