SU men’s 8th-place finish at Wisconsin Pre-Nationals highlights weekend

Syracuse cross country competed in the Princeton Fall Classic on Friday and the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals on Saturday.

For the Princeton meet, the men’s team placed 19th out of 22 schools, finishing with 528 points. Villanova comfortably placed first with 70 points, followed by Georgetown with 87 points. Princeton finished third at 92 points, with North Carolina (106 points) and Colorado State (138 points) rounding out the top five.

Junior Kamari Miller was first to cross the finish line for SU in the men’s 8k. He finished 55th with a 23:55.4 time. Sophomore Julian Franjeih placed 90th with a time of 24:14.6, with fellow sophomore Solomon Holden-Betts placing 126th (24:37.9).

The women’s team placed 13th out of 22 schools with a 389-point performance. Georgetown claimed the spot with 59 points, finishing slightly ahead of Providence (65 points). North Carolina placed third with 120 points, as Penn State (128 points) and Villanova (141 points) finished fourth and fifth.

Senior Baneet Bains placed 55th with a 20:50.7 time. Sophomore Beatriz Fernandes finished 74th with a 20:56.9 time, five spots ahead of freshman Sarah Lawson (21:01.7). Senior Justus Holden-Betts had a 21:19.2 time, placing 107th.

As for Pre-Nationals at Wisconsin, the event featured 19 ranked teams in each race. The men’s team turned in a very impressive showing, placing eighth with 258 points. SU also beat out 11 ranked schools. Arkansas finished first with 89 points while Iowa State with second with 128 points. Stanford placed third (142 points), with New Mexico (166 points) and Northern Arizona (178 points) closing out the top five.

Crossing the finish line first for the Orange in the men’s 8k was Sam Lawler, placing 34th with a 23:31.1 time. Assaf Harari finished 42nd with a time of 23:26.6, and finishing 55th was Connor Ackley (23:33.6). Alex Comerford (23:36.2) placed 60th while Benne Anderson wasn’t too far behind placing 67th (23:40.9).

The women’s team ended the afternoon in 15th, placing ahead of six ranked schools in the process with 457 points. BYU took home the top spot with 105 points. Washington came in second with 157 points, nine points ahead of third-place Northern Arizona. West Virginia (207 points) and Notre Dame (216 points) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Savannah Rorak led Syracuse with her 25th-place finish, owning a 19:59.5 time. Emma Eastman finished 54th with a 20:16.3 time, with Rylie Lusk placing 103rd (20:38.7). Coming in 128th was Selma Anderson (20:49.8), and Jayden Herberts took home 153rd (21:00.9).

Syracuse will compete in the John Reif Memorial hosted by Cornell on Friday, its final regular season meet.
